How to Choose a Spotting Scope

A spotting scope is a high-magnification optic for viewing distant detail. Choose one by comparing the complete optical and handling specifications, then check current availability rather than relying on an old ranked list.

Read magnification and objective size together

A specification such as 15–45x65 states the magnification range and objective-lens diameter. Higher magnification shows a narrower area and makes a stable support more important, while a larger objective usually adds size and weight. Compare the full specification rather than either number alone.

Choose the body format

An angled eyepiece can make it easier for people of different heights to share one tripod position. A straight body can make initial alignment more direct. The better format depends on viewing position and how the scope will be transported.

Compare viewing and focus specifications

  • Eye relief: the published viewing distance behind the eyepiece.
  • Field of view: how much of the scene is visible at a stated magnification.
  • Close focus: the nearest published focusing distance.
  • Focus control: the mechanism used to move from broad to fine focus.

Check support and accessories
