MSR (Mountain Safety Research) is an American outdoor equipment brand with a long-standing reputation for building reliable, performance-focused camping stoves and gear. Trusted by trampers, mountaineers, and expedition teams worldwide, MSR stoves are designed to perform consistently in demanding conditions. At Dwights, we stock a focused selection of MSR stoves — from ultralight canister stoves for fast-and-light tramping to multi-fuel options for international expeditions — along with MSR cookware to round out your backcountry kitchen. For other stove options, Dwights also carries Jetboil and Optimus.
MSR Camping Stoves
The MSR stove range at Dwights covers three distinct needs. The MSR PocketRocket 2 is the classic choice for weight-conscious trampers — at just 74g, it screws directly onto a standard gas canister and delivers a clean, adjustable flame for everything from boiling water to simmering meals. The MSR WindBurner Personal takes a different approach with its radiant burner and fully integrated pot system, delivering consistent performance in wind and cold where conventional stoves struggle. For those heading overseas or into truly remote territory, the MSR WhisperLite Universal runs on multiple liquid fuels as well as gas canisters, making it one of the most versatile expedition stoves available.
MSR Cookware
MSR cookware is designed to work efficiently with their stove range and to hold up to regular backcountry use. Options include lightweight aluminium and hard-anodised pots in sizes suited to solo trampers through to small groups. MSR cookware is compact, nests well, and is built to last through seasons of camping and tramping use.

Frequently Asked Questions — MSR
What MSR products does Dwights stock?
Dwights stocks a range of MSR camping stoves and cookware. In stoves, you'll find the MSR PocketRocket 2 (an ultralight canister stove weighing just 74g), the MSR WindBurner Personal (a wind-resistant integrated stove-and-pot system designed for exposed conditions), and the MSR WhisperLite Universal (a multi-fuel stove suited to international travel and remote expeditions where canister gas isn't always available). Dwights also carries a selection of MSR cookware to complement these stoves.
MSR PocketRocket 2 vs MSR WindBurner — which is right for me?
The MSR PocketRocket 2 is the pick for trampers who prioritise minimal weight and pack size — at 74g it's one of the lightest stoves available, and it suits calm to moderate conditions when you can find some shelter. The MSR WindBurner is purpose-built for exposed, windy environments: its radiant burner and insulated, sealed pot system work efficiently even in high wind, making it the better choice for alpine routes, open ridgelines, or camping on exposed DOC huts and campsites. If most of your cooking is in sheltered hut kitchens or calm conditions, the PocketRocket 2 saves weight. If you're regularly camping in the open in NZ's changeable weather, the WindBurner earns its keep.
Is MSR WhisperLite good for NZ tramping?
The MSR WhisperLite Universal is a capable stove but it's not the most practical choice for typical NZ Great Walk or hut-to-hut tramping, where isobutane-propane canisters are readily available. The WhisperLite's strengths lie in its multi-fuel capability — it can run on liquid fuel including white gas, kerosene, and unleaded petrol — which makes it invaluable for extended overseas expeditions or travel to regions where gas canisters are hard to source. For NZ tramping, most people will find the PocketRocket 2 or WindBurner more convenient and lighter to carry. The WhisperLite is the right tool if you're planning international travel or multi-week remote expeditions.
Are MSR stoves compatible with standard gas canisters in NZ?
Yes — the MSR PocketRocket 2 and MSR WindBurner both use the standard Lindal valve isobutane-propane canisters that are widely available in New Zealand at outdoor retailers including Dwights. These canisters are the same format used across most major stove brands. MSR, Jetboil, and Optimus canisters all use this standard valve and are interchangeable. Note that the MSR WhisperLite Universal is a liquid fuel stove and does not use gas canisters.
What fuel does MSR WindBurner use?
The MSR WindBurner runs on standard isobutane-propane gas canisters with a Lindal valve — the same format used by most canister stoves. MSR recommends using their own IsoPro canisters for best performance, but any compatible isobutane-propane canister with a Lindal valve will work. In New Zealand, these canisters are available from Dwights and other outdoor retailers in 110g and 227g sizes. The WindBurner's sealed, integrated pot system is specifically engineered to get the most efficient burn from these canisters even in cold temperatures and wind.
