Pack Rain Covers for Wet Weather Tramping

NZ weather can deteriorate quickly — particularly in the South Island, Fiordland, and the Tararua Ranges. A pack rain cover provides an additional layer of waterproofing over your entire pack, protecting gear through sustained downpours that would eventually defeat even a treated pack fabric. They're one of the lowest-cost, highest-value accessories you can add to your tramping setup.

Pack rain covers work by pulling over your loaded pack from the bottom up, with a fitted elastic hem that holds it in place. Most include a storage pouch that clips to the pack or stuffs into a hip belt pocket for quick deployment when the weather changes. Choosing the right size matters — covers are typically sized by pack volume in ranges covering 20–90L packs — check the size guide for your pack volume.

High-visibility covers in orange or yellow provide a useful secondary benefit: improved visibility on ridge lines and in scrub, which can be a meaningful safety consideration in low-visibility conditions. Dwights stocks rain covers in both hi-vis and subdued tones.
