Confirm access and current track conditions

The Queen Charlotte Track crosses public and private land and is shared by walkers and riders. Check the current DOC Queen Charlotte Track page for alerts, road conditions, land-access fees and temporary repairs. Recent storm damage can make sections muddy, narrow or slower than expected.

Build the plan around accommodation and transport

Choose the exact sections, book overnight accommodation or campsites, and confirm boat or road transfers. Pack transfers can change the carried load but do not remove the need for each walker to carry rainwear, warmth, water, food, medication and emergency essentials.

Carry water and manage shared use

Water availability varies, and untreated supplies need the treatment specified by the operator or land manager. Carry enough for the day. Stay alert for riders, follow signs and allow extra time where repair work or slips affect the surface.

Pack for exposed ridges and wet clay

Use footwear with reliable wet grip, a waterproof jacket, warm layer, sun protection, first aid and a head torch. Overnight walkers also need the sleep and cooking equipment required by their bookings.
