New Zealand Great Walks Packing Framework

There is no single gear list for every Great Walk

New Zealand’s Great Walks include coastal, forest, alpine and river journeys. Facilities and seasonal risks differ by route, so start with the current DOC Great Walks information and the individual track page. Confirm bookings, transport, track alerts, hut or campsite facilities and the forecast before finalising your pack.

The shared core

  • A comfortable pack with a waterproof liner.
  • Waterproof outer layers plus warm, quick-drying clothing.
  • A sleeping bag and sleep clothing suited to the expected conditions.
  • Food for the itinerary plus a delay margin, and cooking equipment where facilities do not provide it.
  • Water containers and the treatment method appropriate to the route.
  • Navigation, first aid, head torch, personal medication and emergency shelter.
  • A suitable emergency communication device and a shared trip plan.

Adjust for the route

Coastal tracks can involve tides, sun, sand and exposed shorelines. Alpine tracks can involve rapid temperature changes, snow, ice or avalanche terrain outside their managed season. Forest routes may be persistently wet or muddy. River journeys have a different equipment and competency profile again. Never transfer a list from one track without checking the destination’s current official guidance.

Hut and campsite decisions

Do not assume every hut has cooking gas, lighting, heating or food. Check the named hut and season. Campers need a complete shelter and sleep system, while hut users still need enough insulation for cold bunkrooms and disruption to the itinerary.

Pack by function

Group equipment into dry sleep gear, walking clothing, storm protection, food and cooking, navigation, emergency equipment and personal needs. This makes omissions easier to spot and keeps critical items accessible. The official multi-day tramp gear list is a useful final check.

For current equipment categories, browse hiking packs, rain jackets and sleeping bags. Select against the route and your fit rather than a universal ranking.

Final check

Reopen the individual track page immediately before departure. Conditions, facilities, alerts and access can change after any article is published.
