How to Clean and Maintain a Leatherman Multi-Tool
A multi-tool collects grit, moisture and residue around its pivots. Regular cleaning and inspection help the tools open correctly and make damage easier to spot. Follow the instructions for the exact model and finish.
Make the tool safe to handle
Work in a clear, well-lit area away from children. Open one implement at a time and keep fingers out of the closing path. If a blade or lock is damaged, stop using that implement rather than testing it under load.
Remove dry debris first
Brush or wipe away loose dirt from handles, pivots and tool channels. Use only cleaning methods approved for the model. Avoid aggressive solvents, prolonged soaking and abrasives that can damage finishes or leave residue in the mechanism.
Dry every recess
Dry the tool promptly after cleaning or wet use. Pay attention to pivots, locks and the inside of the handles. If the tool has been exposed to salt water, follow the manufacturer’s specific rinse and care instructions before drying.
Lubricate sparingly
Use a suitable lubricant only where the manufacturer recommends it. Apply a small amount to the pivot, work the implement carefully, then wipe away excess so it does not attract grit. Food-contact use may require a product intended for that purpose.
Inspect before storage
- Check that locks engage and release normally.
- Look for cracks, loose components, corrosion and damaged cutting edges.
- Confirm removable bits and accessories are secure.
- Store the clean, dry tool where it cannot be accessed unintentionally.
Do not dismantle a tool or reshape a damaged lock unless the manufacturer authorises that repair. Use the warranty or service route for structural faults.
