How to Choose Dehydrated Meals for Camping and Tramping

Dehydrated meals can simplify food planning because they are compact and usually need only measured hot water and waiting time. They are not all equivalent: compare the nutrition panel, serving size, preparation instructions and ingredients for the person and trip.

Read the serving information first

A pouch described as “two serves” may be intended for sharing or for a smaller appetite. Check the prepared serving size, energy per pouch and how the meal fits with the rest of the day’s food. Trip duration, temperature, effort and individual needs all affect how much food is appropriate.

Check ingredients and allergens

Read the current package every time, even if you have bought the flavour before. Recipes can change. Confirm allergens, dietary requirements and any ingredients that a person in the group avoids. If an allergy is serious, follow the person’s established management plan rather than relying on a general product category.

Include water and fuel in the calculation

Record how much water each meal requires and whether the instructions call for boiling water or further cooking. A light food pouch still depends on carried or safely sourced water and enough stove fuel. Follow the meal and stove manufacturers’ instructions rather than guessing preparation time.

Test meals before an important trip

Try a meal at home using the same water measurement and waiting time you will use outdoors. This checks flavour, texture, portion size and whether the packaging is easy to handle. It also reduces the chance of discovering an unsuitable meal when alternatives are limited.

Pack and prepare carefully

  • Inspect the seal and use-by information before packing.
  • Protect pouches from punctures and moisture.
  • Use the stated water volume; too little leaves dry food and too much creates soup.
  • Stir as directed, including the corners of the pouch, and allow the full standing time.
  • Pack out empty pouches and leftover food.

For international travel, biosecurity rules apply to food brought into New Zealand. Check the current New Zealand Government guidance and declare food when required.
